Rather than approaching art as a series of isolated techniques or projects, I designed learning experiences where students could meaningfully connect their homeroom inquiry to the visual art project that they would like to expand more upon by setting up various stations that can meaningfully connect and further expand their ideas. Across grade levels, I encourage students to see art-making not only a means for creative expression but also building resilience, by introducing Studio Habits of Mind. During a KG How the World Works unit, students were looking into weather patterns in their homeroom, students became curious about how different kinds of weather influence what people wear and how they protect their bodies. I extended this inquiry through a series of art stations where students explored the human figure, clothing, shape, and body structure. They sculpted figures, designed and collaged weather-appropriate attire, and used drawing and painting to study the body in sections — head, torso, and legs. Through this process, students connected scientific observation with visual representation, using art to show how people respond to the world around them. USA. 2015-2016The Mission Hill School is a Boston Public Pilot School. It is a small school (approximately 250 children, ages 3-14). The school is a project-based, collaborative curriculum, inclusive of all learning abilities. With the full-time art teacher, Jeanne Rachko, and student teachers, Henry Novak and June Park, we have planned lessons around the theme of Finding Pattern in Nature,&nbsp; Ancient Civilization, and Who We Are.Pattern in NatureWe focused on patterns in nature for the first trimester. Students observed sunflowers, shells, and insects to think about the recurring patterns we can learn from the Fibonacci sequence. Then based on the age group, students either worked on creating a narrative piece or designing an awareness poster on endangered animals.Ancient CivilzationFor the second trimester, students focused on the study of an ancient civilization, centered around Chinese culture. During this period, students question how people lived long ago and investigate the legacies we owe to the past. Students experienced oriental caligraphy and painting.Who We AreFor the last trimester, students explored the Struggle for Justice in America centered around the concept on identity. We incorporate the neuroscience of dyslexia, the best practices of special education, and the power of EdTech to construct enrichment curricula and teacher training programs for global distribution. Notice Ability provides three main courses, entrepreneurship, engineering and architecture, and art. Each course introduces students to professions that highlight the neurological strengths of the dyslexic mind. Courses are delivered through hybrid instruction, e-learning, and classroom. Despite South Korea's liberation in 1945, true freedom was not realized until the June 1987 resistance, after years of dictatorship and military coups. Similarly, in many parts of Asia, individual and social freedoms are only recently being recognized, while in the West, the concept of "freedom" has long been established within the framework of democracy. The series expresses how basic rights—such as the freedom to travel, dream, and express oneself—are often suppressed and censored by religious or authoritarian regimes. The deliberate blending of text and background colors makes the words difficult to read, unless viewers actively engage with the piece. Xeno 2021-2022 The COVID-19 pandemic, which began in early 2020, exposed and amplified social issues that have long been marginalized. Through Xeno (2021-2022), I highlight how COVID policies in Korea have greatly restricted internationals from accessing crucial information, safety measures, and resources. The prefix "xeno" means "foreign" or "external," and this series conveys how internationals have been marginalized and treated as invisible within Korean society during the pandemic. Throughout the shifting COVID policies, internationals were excluded from public mask purchases, faced mandatory testing that applied only to certain nationals, and were restricted from receiving important text message alerts. Light, Wind, Shadow 2020 Light, Wind, Shadow (2020) delves into the educational philosophy of constructivism and the critical perspective of James Elkins on art education. Constructivism suggests that learning is not about filling an empty vessel but is shaped by the culmination of past experiences. James Elkins, however, critiques the lack of clear methods in art education. In response, student-centered approaches like choice-based art education have emerged, yet a disconnect remains between experiencing the creative process as a student versus as an artist. This disconnect became more apparent during the COVID-19 pandemic, which exacerbated the challenges in art education. While quarantined around a pine tree farm in early 2020, I used discarded vinyl greenhouse covers as my canvas, drawing lines that reflected the shifting shadows of the pine trees.
